Bruce Allen's Canada
This just popped into our mailbox. And because we’re not complacent, here’s the original email that’s going around.
“WE ARE CANADIANS”
Bruce Allan is on the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Committee and new Canadians (specifically Hindi’s/ Indian’s) want him fired for his recent comments outlined below:
Subject: Our National Anthem
I am sorry, but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Hindi – enough is enough. Nowhere or at no other time in our Nation’s history, did they sing it in Italian, Japanese, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German, Portuguese, Greek, or any other language because of immigration. It was written in English, adapted into co-founding French, and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the Hindi version translation, which was not even close to our National Anthem.
I am not sorry if this offends anyone, this is MY COUNTRY – IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP —— please pass this along.
I am not against immigration — just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past — and LONG LIVE CANADA!’
It’s time we all get behind Bruce Allen, and scrap this Political Correctness crap. His comments were anything but racist, but there are far too many overly sensitive ‘New Canadians’ that are trying to change everything we hold dear.
ARE WE PART OF THE PROBLEM??? Think about this: If you don’t want to forward this for fear of offending someone, will we still be the Country of Choice and still be CANADA if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries who have come to live in CANADA because it is the Country of Choice??????
Think about it!
IMMIGRANTS, NOT CANADIAN’S, MUST ADAPT.
It is Time for CANADA to speak up. If you agree, pass this along; if you don’t agree — delete it and reap the ill wind because of your complacency!
While all this is pretty hilarious/disturbing/not far off from what Allen’s lunatic supporters have been saying for months, the part that really scares us is this threat of ‘the ill wind’ they speak of. What could they mean? Nobody pull Bruce Allen’s finger!

This email isn’t about Bruce Allen, it’s about me, Bruce ALLAN! Can you people even read????

I just love to add comment to these forums when so many people seem to have their knickers in a right tight twist. So many barmies on here that I’ve giggled uncontrollably during the full read. he he
I’d just like to add that I’ve worked in some 50+ countries in this fine world and I can see why Canada is voted, year after year, to be one of the top 5 places in the world to live. A very nice spot this Canada is. Of course I was born here so I have a biased opinion one may suggest (plus my family goes back 5 generations).
Whenever in another country, I’ve always received the utmost respect from most of the people in the country. Alas, I’ve worked in civil war areas, with militaries, in 3rd world countries, a heap of sh%t holes let me tell you. I’ve been away for over 20 years but return often. One thing I`ve noticed overseas is that people in other countries hold huge respect for Canada. Why? I believe because of our charter of rights. It is one of the strongest charters in the developed world. Plus, Canada`s immigration policy is quite fair and reasonable; a tad slow possibly but foreigners rights are upheld I generally believe.
Do you agree with Canada’s immigration policy? Do you agree that Canada needs more people, especially the young, to counter act the unproportional number of aging baby boomers that we’ll have in Canada’s near future? You know, to pay the taxes to keep care of our old? One thing though, I wish Canada’s immigration policy was more like Australia’s. The aussies are a focused lot and they’ve always been concerned about mass immigration. Not any more though. They have a handle on it and are accepting skilled workers; more from Asia now than any other time in their history. Canada is the same actually at this moment in time. Just have a look at the Australian immigration visa web site and note the second languages listed. The aussies are solely english but they give extra visa points if a visa applicant has a second or third language. Note that english is their national language and one must prove through an exam that they are competent in the english language prior to a obtaining a visa. Exemptions to this are given to native english speakers from various countries however.
Why am I boring you with this?
I just reckon Canada needs to change our immigration policy to more closely resemble australia. Oz and Canada are very similar countries actually so why not have similar immigration policies I believe. The aussies are just more stringent with the english language as well. Possibly because they have one national language and Canada has two.
One may mention the aborigines in aussie land and all the racism in past years and criticize. Well, Australia is trying to make amends for those old decisions and policies which is similar to what Canada is doing from what I see. That is a good thing. Think about that for a moment. How many countries in this world are helping their own people indigenous or otherwise? Not many… How many countries are now making amends to groups of people in their countries that were treated poorly a generation, or more, ago? Again, not many. Think about it.
Hey, here’s an idea, world empires! Lets go back and start from the Pharoahs, Elamite to the Assyrians to the Babylonians to Medo-Persian to Greece and Alexander the Great! Then pause through the Roman, which was never actually defeated I might add, not forgetting the Vedic, or Han, surely not. Then things get more continental and more known with the Abbasid, Byzantine, Venetian, Siam, Ottoman, Holy Roman and British. Did I miss any? Sure I did, lots. There were many dynasties and regional empires in our world’s history. Have a look, go on, google it. So, should we attempt to make up for all the mistakes made in past? Surely not. Lets just deal with what we have today and move forward.
Moving forward…
I think if you read the newspaper or watch the international news it is easy to see how many countries are struggling these days. Lots of killing going on. Lots of sh&t. Yeah, and in Canada we talk about budgets, economy, clmate change, crime rates, gang killings, housing, pensioners and weather. Man are we lucky. We don’t have racial strife in this country that kills daily. Pakistan does, India does, Iraq does, Iran does, Russia does, Chad does, Rawanda does, Kenya does, Nigeria does, Congo does, China does… ok, you get the point and realise that there are more…
Hmmmm, kinda makes ya wonder eh? Maybe if we just keep Canada the way it is. Yeah, lets keep it in the same spirit in which it was built. It is a fantastic country. Two languages: French/English. People from 100+ different countries live in Canada.
Here’s a hint… if you came to this country in the last 40 years, remember that the baby boom generation in Canada is a large proportion of this country. Our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents built this country so we are quite sentimental towards it. Don’t try and change the country. Just deal with it and learn to live like Canadians know how to live. Hey, if we in the top 5 of the world, why change it? Don’t try and fix something that is not broken.
In all the countries I was in (and I lived in a few different ones), I abided by their rules. I considered myself lucky to be allowed in their country (even if it was a sh&t hole) and respected all the people.
I think that is a Canadian trait…we show respect, eh?
nb…anyone know anything about the Vedic mentioned above?
- Feb 22, 01:38 AMCANADA THAT I LOVE
I totally support the text in green above. Although I agree with Bruce Allen I think “Lotus Land” puts it a little more diplomatically. We have no problem with people coming into our country if they are coming here to live peacefully and contribute to the economy. Where we draw the line is when people want us to change for them (i.e. sing our national anthem in a language other than one of our two official languages). I have no problem with people recognizing their own religions AT HOME as long as it doesn’t interfere with our existing laws and guidelines. We will stand strong as Canadians and, like in the USA, people will be french CANADIANS, italian CANADIANS, east indian CANADIANS, and so on. Not the other way around.

If someone wants to translate our anthem into their language and sing it… ok.
If the suggestion is that the national anthem be sung “officially” in another language, I do have a problem with that. The anthem (like the flag etc.) has been legislated and exists as such. It would take more legislation to change this.
I do have a bone to pick with the email’s author. As everyone ought to know, the anthem was written in French, not English. It was translated (at least three different ways) over the years into English. The most popular version (written in 1905) was finally adopted as the English version (after a few last minute revisions) of the official anthem when O Canada became our anthem in 1980. The French version was never changed.
It bugs me more that the author doesn’t care to know the history of our anthem (while apparently single handedly telling the rest of us how to think and feel about it), then it does that “new” Canadians want to translate it into their mother tongue.
- Jul 30, 02:29 AMNinny
Er… the national anthem was originally written in FRENCH, not english and it’s only 26 years after it was first composed and written that a translation appeared.
So there! Get your facts right before commenting on anything!

I am a second generation Canadian. My parents came from the Azores and both learned to read and write in English and they both stressed the importance of speaking it at home as well. I know how to speak both Portuguese and English fluently. When the Europeans came to Canada, they adapted Canadian way of life and didn’t insist on changing laws to suit the European community. This is civil occupation in every sense of the word.

I am a 2nd generation Canadian. I was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Canada 31 years ago when I was 5 with my family. I speak English fluently and Mandarin is my 2nd language. My Dad chose to move the family to Canada because it provided a better lifestyle and education for his family.
Let’s learn to show respect for the Canadian culture and learn to live in the country that opened their doors to us and gave us a better life for us minorities.
If you can’t adapt then really, should you be here to begin with?!
This is Canada, the national Anthem should be sang in either French or English. THAT’S IT!!
RESPECT THE CANADIAN LANGUAGE AND LEARN IT!
I can understand if you want the Canadian Anthem to be understood in a different Language, but then you HAVE to include… CHINESE, CANTONESE, MANDARIN, KOREAN, ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE, ETC… you get the point, yes?!

I have very strong veiws on the way this government is dealing with the shortage of people in this country. While I do not mind bringing in immigrants, I believe that Canada should help the people already here to have children. This government supports immigrants, abortion, sex changes for prisoners and yet does not even help it’s own infertile population to have children through things like In Vitro Fertilization, and other fetility treatments. These treatments cost about the same as bringing in and setting up immigrants. I also believe that if you come to our country, adapt to our culture. While we try to accomodate immigrants, they are now starting to over run us and our culture is dissappearing at an alarming rate.We are supposed to respect immigrants rights? Why can they not respect ours? Bruce Allan is right!

I don’t need to say anything Dec.27,12:22 & Nov.30,12:11 says it all for me. AMEN we need more people to speak out!

I agree wholeheartedly on this matter with Bruce Allan. I think that these “Immigrants” are actually destroying the very thing that attracted them to Canada in the first place. I emigrated with my family in 1950 from Britain and my parents certainly didn’t expect changes to be made for us. When we move and travel to other countries, we do not expect other peoples there to change things to suit us. So why does our country do it? Secondly, why do we allow it? By doing and saying nothing, we as a nation condone the actions of our leaders. I think I am pretty safe in saying that politicians will do anything for the votes.

Bizarre is the e-mailer’s defence of Bruce Allen regarding his opposition to the singing of the Canadian national anthem in Hindi because he dislikes the idea that Canadians should not adapt to immigrants.
His contention that the anthem should be sung only in English and in French reminds me of the Catholic Church’s absurd argument that the Liturgy could be recited only in Latin, not the vernacular, because it was written originally in that language. Canada, like the Catholic Church, is a confluence of peoples of many cultures and languages; their respective messages of hope and peace are not lost in translation. In fact, including others’ traditions has served only to strengthen the two; the Santa Claus myth and the Christmas tree— two pagan symbols—, and our tradition of English-French compromise for the greater good, are perfect examples of that.
The writer’s presumption that immigrants are advocating for our national anthem’s recital in a language other than an official language fails to recognise that the South Asian community in British Columbia has lived there for over a century; while some may be immigrants, many are in fact deep-seated Canadians. Consequently, they, like Anglophones and Francophones, have every right to express their wish for inclusion in the Canadian national identity; to deny them the opportunity to do so would be so un-Canadian.

What I find really Bizarre is how long the Athem would take to sing if we let all the different languages sing it, could be a couple of hours, point is we are in Canada and the idea a of multiculture is a myth, I don’t see many of the new comers trying to be a part of Canada only trying to make it another of their country’s. I agree with the Aussies and wish we had a Goverment that was not all wishy washy at any attempt to keep our country the way my father and his father fought for it. Enough if you want to be a part of Canada be a part of it and leave with us, and don’t try to create a country that you left ??? Why did you leave, cause your bringing all the same problems here that you left it for. Except your screwing My HOME up now.

Would this even be an issue if the were the American anthem? Written in english…sung in english. Not racist or puratan…just the way it is and should be
- Apr 23, 08:58 PMChristine Neumayer
I believe the national anthem should be sang in english/french and that is it. If the immigrants (and I am decendant of an immigrant also) don’t like the situation they should return to their country, because obviously they don’t appreciate and respect our Country! It’s the same for wearing turbans as an RCMP that should not be allowed. The uniform of the RCMP is what it is and it does not include a turban. You want to be an RCMP you wear the attire or don’t become an RCMP. When in Rome you do as the Romans. Thats my opinion!

amen Bruce Allan. its time for our elected officials to stop cowering under the word “racism”. western nations seem to have this policy of “apologistic yesterdarianism” for crimes against minorities commited generations ago by people long since dead. people come to this country to learn about its culture and CO-EXIST within it. anyone who disagrees with Bruce Allan’s commentary is a racist and a traitor to this country.

Regarding the Bruce Allen Debate.
While I am not necessarily opposed to the singing of the national anthem in other languages I find the proposed choice of Hindi at the Olympic Games to be unbalanced to say the least. If the Canadian national anthem is to be sung in another language other than English or French the obvious choice should be a Native Canadian language first and foremost. As the Games are in Vancouver I would suggest the Haida language.

OK, so we let more immigrants in so they can fund the pensions for the baby boomers, who is going to fund the immigrant’s pension? bad policy.

If any group has a right to sing the National Athem in another language it would be the Canadian Native. Do we hear them complaining.
