Dir. by André Mélançon This is heavy shit. Hard to find, dubbed into english, only on VHS; this Quebecois children’s film helped teach a lot of us about the world and the cruel, bitter irony in it. Over the winter holidays two rival gangs of neighborhood kids declare medieval snowball war, building crazy snow forts complete with secret escape hatches. But at the heart of this movie is the painful truth about the futility and emotional consequences of war. This is a parable is about human aggression, bravery and love. Caught in the middle are a boy, a girl, and the Dog Who Stopped the War.

   La Guerre Des Tuques is one, if not the most defining movie of my generation (I am now 30), and the generations bordering mine. Most Franch Canadian between 20 and 40 years old today can quote this movie very well.

   Wow. I didn’t see this review when it came out. Glad someone just commented on it. I saw this movie pretty much every year of the French Immersion program I was in through elementary school.

   This and “Les Tacots”. Did you see that one?
