NEW MOVIE MONDAYS

Bridge to Terabithia
Based on the classic children’s book, which for us would usually be a double no-no, this movie is pretty good for what it is. If you don’t know the story you won’t want us to spoil things, so we’ll just say it’s about a boy and a girl who — using their imaginations — “discover” a magical land across the stream behind their house. Outcasts at school, they quickly become best friends and share adventures and overcome personal fears… all in an extremely positive, yet inoffensive way. Then somewhere along the way the movie pokes you in the eye, kicks you in the nuts and you wonder what the hell happened and how to take it. One of us came close to crying… a little too close.

Reno 911: Miami
We don’t know many people who are huge fans of the TV show Reno 911. It’s a pretty decent COPS spoof with moments of glory, but in the long run it is just a COPS spoof, and for some that can get tired fast. Here, that gag is played out for an entire film. If you’re a fan of the TV show you’ll totally love it. If not, you probably won’t. But for us, this is the best thing we’ve seen since 1995. Why? Because this is the first time that the entire cast of the best TV show of all time, MTV’s The State, has been on screen together since. Three of The State‘s original cast members went on to start Reno 911, and they took this big-screen opportunity to have a bit of a reunion. Watching this was one of the best moments of our lives. No joke.

Perry Mason: Season 2
With its catchy title music, Perry Mason is the show that set the bar for courtroom dramas. Running from 1957-1966, it was one of the original television classics — the original Law and Order. Raymond Burr is Mason, the lawyer who always clears his clients. Each episode starts with a crime and then as the proceedings move to the halls of Justice, Mason and his defense team must figure out all the angles. You can always expect a surprising confession or a sneaky twist of truth in this classic courtroom series, but not in that cheesy Matlock/Murder She Wrote kind of way.
